Top 25 Reactions to Telling People You’re Intermittent Fasting

Skeptical-Expression-is-UnderminingNot too many years ago it was out of the ordinary to be on a low-carb diet.  Sure, there were those who had done their research and started cutting out simple carbohydrates like white bread, white rice and pasta, but most of us weren’t completely convinced such “drastic” measures were the way to go.  Experts warned us that we needed a little gluten and grain in our diets, at least in moderation.

It certainly didn’t help perceptions about  the health benefits of low-carb eating to see its proponents loading their lunch plates with salami, boiled eggs, cheese, nuts and avocados – foods we were told we should only eat now and then in moderation.  However, as we saw more people attributing their weight loss,  normalized blood sugar  and cholesterol levels to cutting out carbs, we started to take a closer look at the low-carb lifestyle.  Luckily, so did medical science, and today, numerous studies have shown a low-carb diet to have clear advantage over a low-fat diet.

Today, I believe we’re on the verge of a similar wave  that will make intermittent fasting a household phrase.  Unfortunately,  we’re not there yet, and those of us practicing intermittent fasting (especially those fasting daily) sometimes get odd looks of bewilderment and worry from friends and family.  Here are 25 such reactions to the news, “I’m fasting.”

  1. “Good for you.  I could never do it.”
  2. “And you’re sure that’s healthy?”
  3. “So, how long do you think you’ll be doing THAT?”
  4. “Have you done your research on that?”
  5. “What does your wife/husband/boyfriend/girlfriend think?”
  6. “What does your family think?”
  7. “What does your doctor think?”
  8. “Just how much weight do you plan to lose?”
  9. “You’re not fasting today though, right?”
  10. “You’re not going to be fasting then though, right?”
  11. “But you don’t HAVE to fast today, right?”
  12. “So, how long have you been fasting?”
  13. “Is it for religious reasons?”
  14. “I didn’t know you were Muslim/Christian/Jewish/Buddhist etc.”
  15. “Wait a minute, you’re STILL fasting?”
  16. “Doesn’t that just make you overeat?”
  17. “All you have to do is eat less and exercise, not starve yourself.”
  18. “So what are the health benefits?”
  19. “What made you start THAT?”
  20. “I heard that’s not good for women/seniors/diabetics.”
  21. “[expert name] doesn’t recommend that for [specific type of person].”
  22. [silence]
  23. “Now don’t get too obsessed with this fasting thing.”
  24. *skeptically* “OK.”
  25. “Have fun with that.”
